Back in 2004, Helen was awarded the “Nassau County Legislature Trailblazer” for her community affairs involvement – and she hasn’t stopped trailblazing since! The late County Legislator Norma Gonsalves once referred to Helen as the “matriarch of the Salisbury community.” After meeting Helen, you won’t find it difficult to understand why.

Helen may have been raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, but her heart belongs to Salisbury. For the past 40+ years, she and her husband have lived here in East Meadow / Salisbury, a community where they raised their two sons, Michael and Christopher. Helen has supported our community in so many ways: from her work supporting schools to maintaining the Community Association of Stewart Avenue (CASA). According to Pete Giordano, VP of the Salisbury Republican Club, Helen has always been “the go-to person if you need her.” She was involved with our schools for many years, having been a long-time officer in the Bowling Green PTA. She kicked off the Senior Citizen Prom Committee to improve interactions between the school and senior citizen communities. Moreover, Helen served as an assistant within the Kindergarten Intervention program for 18 years.

Back in 1986, local residents formed CASA because of local drug activity on Carmen Avenue. While its mission may have evolved over the years (particularly after the drug problem was largely resolved), CASA never stopped improving our community. In 2002, Helen was promoted to CASA’s president.

In addition, Helen has supported food drives, blood drives, and religious education at St. Brigid – even hosting classes in her home. Helen also participated in the East Meadow Kiwanis, East Meadow Security Council, Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni, Community Advisory Council for the Nassau University Medical Center, etc. etc. etc. Helen even helped rebuild the Central Nassau County Little League, remaining involved for 13+ years (i.e., Main Director, Treasurer). The baseball field remains one of her favorite places in East Meadow.

Helen has been praised by many organizations, receiving awards for her involvement, even being recognized in 2010 as the East Meadow Herald’s’ "East Meadow’s ‘Person of the Year.’"

Helen has remained involved with the Salisbury Republican Club for many years. She noted that “I come from the world of Democrats, but it’s not the party of the people.” When asked why she votes Row B and remains politically involved, she expressed that her values align with our party’s principles. Put succinctly, the Republican Party is both “pro-neighborhood and pro-families.”

When we interviewed her, Helen noted the importance of maintaining a “neighborly mentality” – holding the idea that the neighbors on your block could become dear friends.

To spread our message and uphold our values, Helen emphasized the need to remain respectful and be friendly with everyone. By being great listeners, Helen believes that we may find that we can achieve common ground with the opposition and advance progress towards achieving our principles. Most importantly, Helen stresses the need to vote – especially in local elections (like in November!).

When you look around our community, you can’t help but see the impact that our first lady of Salisbury, Helen, has made. We both appreciate Helen’s efforts and hope that her example encourages others to follow in her footsteps. We need more folks to become involved in Salisbury, this community we call home.
